Pure Socialism Doesn’t Work
To many people socialism sounds like a dream and in theory one might think of it as a utopia. In fact, Chavez in Venezuela is trying to create pure Socialism in his own country, and I believe, when he’s finished with his own country, he’s going to try to create pure Socialism in all of South America.
But we have to be very careful about this because in the real world, pure socialism really doesn’t work. In fact, they tried it in one country in Africa peacefully many years ago, and it turned out to be the poorest country in the world at that time. Capitalism has its problems too, because it always has its winners and losers, and how do you deal with the losers? But in socialism, in the long run, it only has losers. Why is this?
Because selfishness, or to put it more politely, self-interest is inborn in every individual, and governments can’t change this, even though Socialism tries. In other words, in Socialism you don’t have the incentive or motivational factor to better yourself materially that Capitalism has, and therefore you would tend not to work as hard or as creatively to achieve greater progress for yourself and eventually for society. What you gain for yourself would also be a gain for society. Governments can only use this self-interest factor to their advantage to create a better society. And therefore, I believe that Capitalism is the most effective system in doing this.
As I said above, there will be losers in this system as well, but here is where some type of socialism has to be used. So, in a sense, a balanced economy would really be the best where capitalism would be the prime motivating factor with socialism complementing it by guaranteeing that everyone would at least get all the necessities of life (food, health, water and shelter).. But one has to be careful here because the best way that the poor can actually be helped is that if they try to help themselves by getting the best education they can possibly get so that they can compete in a thriving economy. Otherwise they will tend to drift into a laziness, that probably would become a generational habit, that would not help them grow into maturity. Therefore one has to realize that there will never.be an economy where you will have an earthly equality, but capitalism, if it’s practiced right, seems to be the best way in which you have the opportunity to try to accomplish this.
